BrightPoint for Children

Kandaria is a community located in the western part of Kenya, about a 45 minute drive from Kisumu. The Community has a total population of approx. 6,500 and there is a very high poverty level, commonly characterized by scarcity of water. If water is life and sanitation is dignity, then lack of both bring the harsh realities of life to this community. High occurrence of water borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and lack of proper sanitation are familiar threats. Women and children walking for long distances in pursuit of the precious commodity has also considerably reduced the productivity of the community due to long hours spent in search of safe drinking water.

The children’s education is also a priority in Kandaria. The Leadership Council has decided that raising the quality of education in the Primary Schools will help the most children in the short term; and this improved quality will help more students pass the 8th Grade National exam to be able to continue on to Secondary School.

Almost 400 children attend Sigoti Primary and the PTA and Leadership Council have chosen Star Students to represent them as BrightPoint children.
